The English major of School of Foreign Languages of Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) ranks second in Sichuan province and 48th in China among 925 participating universities in the "Ranking of Undergraduate Education Majors of China (Wuhan University Edition)" recently released in 2021-2022. It continues to maintain the rank of "5★- Major" (i.e., top 5%-10% in China). (Our English major is 5.2%). "The undergraduate course education rank of Chinese universities" is designed by CASEE, RCCSE in Wuhan University, and the research and development of China Science and Education Evaluation Network. The evaluation results are published by science publishing house, thus it is the most influential evaluation report of academy in China.

Since 2017, the ranking of English major of our university has achieved five consecutive rises, and the ranking of English major has also risen from the 4^th in 2016 to the 2^nd in Sichuan province, following the English major of Sichuan University. In 2018, the English major of SWJTU gained the national "5★- Major" grade for the first time and has remained so far, making it the only "5★- Major" in the School of Foreign Languages of our university. In 2018, it ranked 3^rd in the province and 74^th in China (among 744 participating colleges). In 2019, it ranked 3^rd in the province and 66^th in China (among 736 participating colleges); In 2020, it ranked second in the province and 58^th in China (among 955 participating colleges). In 2021, it ranked second in the province and 48^th in China (among 925 participating colleges nationwide).

This achievement fully reflects the strong momentum of the discipline development of the English Department, and highlights that our department has made gratifying progress in personnel training, professional construction and scientific research.

In terms of major construction, the English major was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the first batch of "National First-class Undergraduate Major" construction points by the Ministry of Education in 2020, due to its outstanding educational effects and achievements in major construction. It is also one of the two "National First-class Undergraduate Major" construction points of the School of Foreign Languages in our college.

In terms of the scientific research, teachers of the English Department achieved fruitful results in the project application and research thesis publication in 2020, which injected a strong impetus to professional construction and development. The courses led by Professor Li Chengjian were selected into the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses. Associate Professor Zeng Xiangmin and Dr. Jiang Yan were awarded the general Project funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China in 2020 and the publication of excellent doctoral thesis. Dr. Zhang Yaoyan was awarded the 2020 Annual Planning project of National and Regional University Research by the Ministry of Education. Dr. Qian Yanxu won the Social Science Popularization Project of Sichuan Province in 2020, and Dr. Luo Zaibing published two high-level papers in Foreign Language Teaching and Research and Foreign Language, the top foreign language journals in China.

In the future, the Department of English will make more contributions to the discipline construction and talent cultivation of the School of Foreign Languages by taking the national first-class specialty construction as an opportunity to further improve the quality of undergraduate talents cultivation, and consolidate the strength of disciplinary scientific research.
