In response to the internationalization strategy of the Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), the School of Foreign Languages SWJTU has stepped up its efforts in promoting international exchanges and cooperation in programs such as student exchanges, teaching faculty training, academic exchanges and the running of the school etc. Its unremitting efforts have paid off with remarkable achievements in those programs. The School has established friendly and cooperative ties with higher education institutions in about 20 countries and regions since 2007 including the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Thailand. The programs below list international exchanges and cooperation sponsored by the School since 2007.

1. Exchanges and Communications with Foreign Universities
Since 2007 the School has received visits from 30 university delegations covering 16 countries and regions which include the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Thailand and Vietnam, and has cooperated and collaborated with them all in different academic fields and programmes.

2. Teaching Faculty Training and Exchange
In 2008, 2010，2012，2014 and 2015, the School selected and sent 100 prestigious, young and middle-aged faculty members in four delegations to renowned universities in a number of English-speaking countries for intensive summer vocational training, such as the United States, Britain, and Canada. A total of 25 faculty members currently teach Chinese as a foreign language in more than 10 countries and regions like the United States, Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Vanuatu, South Africa, New Zealand and Sweden. In addition, more than 20 young and middle-aged teachers are pursuing their further studies in famous universities in Britain, the United States, France, Germany and Russia.

3. Student Exchange
More recently, the School signed a collaboration agreement with the Lumiere University Lyon II relating to the implementation of a 2+1+1 programme. 3 to 5 excellent undergraduate students from the Department of French are to be selected and dispatched to the Lumiere University Lyon II for academic courses and programs each year, and these students, upon the completion of their studies, will be awarded joint degrees by both universities. Currently, a total of 25 students are involved in this programme. What’s more, the School has also signed agreements concerning the exchange of undergraduate and postgraduate students with Georgia State University in the United States, Essex University in Britain，Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Taiwan, Kyushu Foreign Languages Academy in Japan, Prefectural University of Hiroshimathe in Japan, Czech Republic’s Palacky University and Thailand’s Khon Kaen University. More than 40 undergraduate and graduate students are to visit about 10 foreign countries like the United States for exchanges or further studies, and over 20 students are to be selected and sent by China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) to serve as Chinese language teachers in France and Germany.

4. Academic Exchanges/ International Academic Conferences
The School has invited over 60 well-known scholars from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Israel, Austria and Hong Kong for lectures and exchanges since 2007. In 2011, the International Symposium On Hongloumeng Medio-translatology was convened jointly by the School of Foreign Languages SWJTU and the Research Institute for A Dream of Red Mansions (Hong Lou Meng, also known as The Legend of Stone), one of the Four Famous Chinese Classics. Foreign sinologists and masters of A Dream of Red Mansions studies from 15 countries and regions were invited to attend this symposium together with over 80 domestic scholars and masters. In the symposium, the scholars and masters presented academic papers and discussed the translation and dissemination of A Dream of Red Mansions abroad. Papers read at the symposium were published in the A Dream of Red Mansions, sixth, 2011 by the School and the Research Institute for A Dream of Red Mansions after the conclusion of the symposium. In August of 2015, the International Conference on Language and Language Education was convened jointly by the School of Foreign Languages SWJTU and the Chinese Centre of Columbia University. Many famous experts and scholars from home and abroad, including the tenure professor Spivak from Columbia University, came to our college to discuss language and language education, which has become a historic event in the field of Chinese social sciences.


5. Development of the Confucius Institute
In more recent years, the School has actively engaged itself in the development of the Confucius Institute SWJTU. 2011 was the year when the Confucius Institute, established jointly between the School and the Karlstad University in Sweden, was officially inaugurated after receiving approval from the NOCFL. The Dean, who represents the Chinese party, is recommended by the School, and the School’s prestigious faculty members are employed to offer courses and hold different activities at the Institute. Presently, one of the oversea deans, Wu Moting is actively contacting German universities on behalf of our university in the hope of establishing a new Confucius Institute in Germany.

6. Foreign Teaching Faculty and Students
At present, 10 foreign experts from Britain, France, Germany and Japan offer academic courses and programs for students in the Department of English, the Department of French, the Department of Japanese, the Department of German, the Department of Translation and Interpreting and the Department of International Chinese. The School provides assistance to the International Affairs Office SWJTU for the employment, management and assessment of these foreign teachers. Additionally, nearly 400 foreign students from such countries and regions as Europe, America, Japan, Southeast Asia, West Asia, South Asia, Africa and Oceania currently learn Chinese or pursue their further studies at the School of Foreign Languages SWJTU.
