Overview

The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) wasawarded master’s degrees of second-level disciplines in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics in 1996. In 1997,SFLbegan education forgraduate students in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, including English and Japanese; in 2000, in German Language and Literature; and in 2006, in French Language and Literature. In 2004,SFL wasauthorized to confer master’sdegree in Japanese Language and Literature.In 2010,it wasauthorized to confermaster’s degree inForeignLanguages andLiterature with five second-level disciplines, including English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2011, SFL began torecruit candidatesforMaster of Translation Studies (MTI), and candidatesforMaster ofTeaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in 2015. Since 2012,SFL andthe School of Arts and Communication (now the College of Humanities) ofSouthwest Jiaotong University have jointly recruited doctoral studentsin Medio-translatology for Chinese Language and Literature, and since 2016,SFLhave independently recruited doctoral students in the second-level discipline of Translation and Media Studies.

Introduction to Master’s Disciplines


(1)Master of English Language and Literature

This degree program is the longest-standing and strongest second-level master’s degree program in foreign languages and literature, with three research directions, including English and American Literature, English Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and Translation Theory and Practice. Drawing on the achievements of western language and literature theories, thisdiscipline focuses on the interdisciplinary study from the perspective of Chinese culture on the basis of comprehensive linguistic theory, literary theory and translation theory, attaches importance to the study of Chinese translations ofEnglishclassics, and cultivates the ability of graduate students to engage in translation criticism and translation appreciation.

(2)Master of Japanese Language and Literature

Since 1997,SFL has recruited graduates in Japanese studiesof thesecond-level disciplines of foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, and isone ofthe firstinstitutions to enroll graduates in Japanese major in Sichuan Province. Approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 2004,SFL was granted the right to confer a master’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature, and mainly recruited and trained Japanese graduatesof Japanese Language and Japanese Social Culture.

(3)Master of German Language and Literature

Since 2000,SFL has recruited graduate students and has trained more than 40 graduate students,and isthe only master’s degree program in German language and literature in Sichuan province.Based on theschool-levelresearch institute (Forschungszentrum f ü r Klassische Deutschsprachige Literatur),two projects funded byNational Social Sciences (including a major project—AStudy on Goethe and the Chinese Translation of His Works) and three projects funded byMinistry of Education,this program has great academic influence in ChineseTranslation of GermanPoetry,German Translations of Chinese classics and GoetheResearch.

(4)Master of French Language and Literature

Since 2006,SFL has recruited graduates as thesecond-level disciplines of foreign linguistics and applied linguistics.In 2010,French Language and Literature has become a second-level discipline inForeignLanguages andLiterature. Thisprogram is mainly engaged in French-Chinese translation of classics theory and practice and has trained nearly 20 graduate students.

(5)Master of Translation Studies (MTI)

This degree program began to recruit graduates in 2011, witharesearch direction— English translation, and recruits experts who are proficient in rail transit engineering English and have strong professional competence in the advantageous disciplines of the university, as well as experts from outside the university,together with our teachers in Translation,based on computer-aided translation tools (Trados language laboratory),and choose practical translation project management as the carrier, combining theory with practice, to cultivate compound talentswho are proficient in translation, technology andmanagement.

(6)Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

This degree program began to recruit graduates in 2015,with two directions, includingInternational Chinese Language Teaching,Comparison between Chinese and Foreign Languages andCross-culturalCommunication, and cultivate graduates with the ability of systematic and solid basic theoretical knowledge and skills of Chinese language and literature,as well as the cross-cultural communication theory.Meanwhile, graduates can be able to communicate and teach bilingually, have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese literature, Chinese culture and cultural exchanges between Chinese culture and foreigncultures,and canbecome high-caliber professionals in various schools, cultural managemententerprises and institutions.
