Recently, the Ministry of Education issued official approval for Southwest Jiaotong University to jointly launch an undergraduate program in Translation with Oxford Brookes University. This program combines the strengths of both universities to create a novel “Translation + AI” interdisciplinary curriculum. It marks a major breakthrough for the School of Foreign Languages in advancing international education and the construction of the New Liberal Arts.

The Translation major of SWJTU has been designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program with profound disciplinary accumulation. It boasts a complete talent training system covering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research in Translation Studies. The major is staffed with a strong faculty team, more than half of whom hold senior professional titles. The double-qualified teaching team specializes in engineering translation. Relying on the university’s distinctive strengths in rail transit, the program focuses on cultivating talents for scientific and technical translation as well as international engineering translation. Catering to the demands of the Belt and Road Initiative, it features a sound practical education system equipped with exclusive training platforms and numerous off-campus internship bases, earning outstanding recognition and a solid reputation in the industry.

The partner institution, Oxford Brookes University, boasts distinctive disciplinary strengths. Our School collaborates with the university’s School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and School of Education, Humanities and Languages to deliver joint talent training. Its Translation major centers on cultivating international language service professionals, with a curriculum tailored to global industry demands. Artificial intelligence is one of its prominent disciplines, supported by cutting-edge laboratory facilities and an experienced research team. The university conducts in-depth research on ethical AI, big data analytics and intelligent language processing. Drawing on abundant university-enterprise resources, it integrates theoretical learning with industrial practice, resulting in highly application-oriented teaching.

This four-year undergraduate program adopts a “3+1” training model. Students will receive full-time study at SWJTU for the first three academic years. Upon completing all course, practical training and relevant requirements of the first three years, students will proceed to Oxford Brookes University for their final year of study. Students who finish all studies and meet the degree conferral criteria of both universities will be awarded two credentials: a General Higher Education Graduation Certificate in Translation and a Bachelor of Arts degree issued by SWJTU of the People’s Republic of China, as well as an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages, Translation and Artificial Intelligence from Oxford Brookes University.
