Distinguished Professor Yang Wuneng Wined the TAC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation

Yang Wuneng, a famous German translator andDistinguished Professor of the School of Foreign Language of Southwest Jiaotong University, wined theTAC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation in Beijing on 19thNov, which is the top translation award.

Promoting Industry Innovations for China’s Further Reform and Opening-up TACConference2018, under the guidance of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration and hosted by Translators Association of China(TAC), was held in the Beijing International Convention Center on 19thNov. At the opening ceremony,TAC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation and the title ofSenior Translator were awarded in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the promotion of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. Seven famous translators, including German translator Yang Wuneng, wined the top translation award—TAC’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation, and other 173 translation experts received the title of Senior Translator.

As a well-known Contemporary German Literature Translator andGoethe-Study expert, Yang Wuneng now is the professor and doctoral supervisor of The College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Sichuan University and The College of Literature and Journalismof Sichuan University, as well as the Distinguished Professor of the School of Foreign Language of Southwest Jiaotong University and chief expert in the Key Program of National Social Science Fund of China—“A study of Goethe and his work’s Chinese Translation”. Yang, who was awarded as “German Fu lei”(Fu lei was a famous Chinese Translator), has devoted himself toliterature translation for over 50 years with rich translation achievements. There were more than 30 typical translation books by him, includingFaust,The Sorrows of Young Werther,Grimm Fairy Tales Collections,The Magic Mountain,Narcissus and Goldmund,Neverending Story.

Yang Wuneng was awarded the Blue Max by the German president in 2000, one of the German lifetime achievement—the scholarly award “Humboldt Prize” in 2001 and the top Goethe-Study award “Goethe Gold Medal” in 2013 to honor his outstanding contribution to Sino-German cultural exchanges, especially to the research and translation of German great scholar Goethe.
