The 10th English Education and Teaching Forum, hosted by ELT (English Language Teaching) Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Press, was organized by School of Foreign Languages of Ningbo University from April 25th to 26th, 2015. More than 370 experts, scholars and teacher representatives from a number of Schools of Foreign Languages in Chinese universities attended this forum. Keynote speakers were Prof. Zhong Weihe, Vice Chairman of Foreign Languages and Literature Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, Chairman of ELT Advisory Board and President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies; Prof. Jiang Hongxin, Vice Chairman of ELT Advisory Board and Vice President of Hunan Normal University; Prof. Wang Lifei, member of ELT Advisory Board and Dean of School of International Studies of University of International Business and Economics; Prof. Ping Hong, Secretary General of the Secretariat of China National Committee for BTI Education.
Business English BA Program and Translation & Interpreting BA program are complements to the traditional English BA Program (in preference to linguistic, literary and cultural studies) under the discipline of English Language Education. This forum set its theme as the national standards respectively for English BA Program, Business English BA Program and Translation & Interpreting BA Program. In the keynote speech session, Prof. Zhong Weihe made a macro interpretation of the national standards for the three BA programs, while speeches made by Prof. Jiang Hongxin, Wang Lifei and Ping Hong respectively detailed the three standards. Moreover, three sub-forums were held focused on the establishment and development respectively of the three BA programs, where some teacher representatives were invited to speak and the audience raised questions to generate meaningful discussion.
On behalf of SFL, Associate Prof. Xu Xiaoyan, Dean of English Department, and Associate Prof. Song Meihua, Dean of Translation and Interpreting Department, attended the forum.
Prof. Song Meihua was invited to give a speech about the Translation & Interpreting BA Program in SWJTU in the related sub-forum. As a part of the degree programs at BA, MA and PhD (Medio-translatology) levels, the BA Program in SWJTU has been developed in talents cultivation, program construction and curriculum reform. The SWJTU’s BA Program is set up in line with the national standard, and in addition, it is combined with the preponderant disciplines such as rail transit. SWJTU sets clear orientations for the specific BA degree holders: to work in language service enterprises, to seek further study in Master of Translation and Interpreting Program, or to be translators or interpreters specialized in engineering and management for international engineering enterprises. The students will have high social responsibility and all-rounded development; professional merits and talents; humanistic values and scientific attainment; historical and global values; creativity and critical thinking ability. The curriculum, tutorial support and CATTI workshop attracted the audience’s interests and brought up heated discussion. Prof. Song also generously shared her concerns about the enrollment propaganda and the internationalization of the BA program. At the end, she posted the notice of “International Seminar on Language and Language Education” hosted by SFL of SWJTU in 2015 August.
This forum, as successful as expected, will guide the development of Schools of foreign Languages all over China.
