From May 13th to 14th, 2023, the 2023 National Symposium on Curriculum Design and Teaching Methods of College German for Universities was held in our university, which was sponsored by the GLT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, and co-sponsored by our school and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press(FLTRP). Experts from the German Group and college German teachers from more than 40 colleges across China attended the meeting to discuss the college German curriculum, teaching materials and teaching methods under the new situation, and to promote the innovation and development of college German teaching.

At the opening ceremony on the first day of the symposium, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of SWJTU Yang Aihua, Deputy Director of the Steering Committee for the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Universities of Higher Education from Tongji University Prof. Zhao Jin, Director of the Comprehensive Language Education and Publishing Branch of the Foreign Studies Association (FESA) Ms. Cui Lan, and the Dean of the School Prof. Yu Linlin delivered speeches, with Prof. Mo Guanghua of the Department of German serving as the moderator. Prof. Jin Zhao from Tongji University, Prof. Yuan Tan, a member of the GLT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Associate Prof. Yiwei Guo from Tongji University, Ms. Mengan Li, Editor of the German Department of the FLTRP, and Associate Prof. Jun He, Director of the Department of German, gave keynote speeches. Ms. Sabine Wilmes, Vice Dean of the Goethe-Institut Peking, who was unable to attend the meeting, also gave an online speech. Prof. Zhang Xiaoqing, a member of the GLT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education from Henan University and Ms. An Yuguang, Director of the German Department of the FLTRP, moderated the relevant sessions.

During the group discussion in the afternoon of the first day of the symposium, other colleagues from the Department of German participated in the teaching design of “Same Class but Different Structure” in the textbook “New Generation College German”, and Ms. Liu Buying, the representative of the college German teaching team of the Department of German, shared and presented the results of the teaching workshop in the second day of the symposium. Ms. Fang Cao commented on Ms. Liu’s presentation, and actively exchanged ideas and discussed with experts and other participants, showing the charm of the college German teaching team of the Department.

SWJTU has close ties with Germany and the German language. German language teaching at SWJTU has been synchronized with the founding of the university, and the inter-university exchanges and cooperation between SWJTU and Germany have been expanding and deepening nowadays. The successful symposium on German language teaching at the university not only demonstrated the image of “small but fine”(“klein aber fein”)of the German Department, but also led the university foreign language teachers to respond positively to the call of the Ministry of Education, actively exploring the curriculum, textbooks, and teaching methods of university foreign languages in the context of “one essence, multiple skills, one specialty, multiple abilities”.
