Ms. Sun Xiaoyuan Won the Second Prize in the Final of the College’s Lesson Competition cum the “Three Advancing Work” Conference of the Department of Engineering English


On October 26, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., the 11th Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition of the School of Foreign Languages was held in classroom 9504, and Ms. Sun Xiaoyuan from the Department of Engineering English won the second prize. Afterwards, the Engineering English Department held a general meeting, and Vice Dean Yang Anwen gave an important speech on the “Three Advancements Work”.

In the competition, Ms. Sun Xiaoyuan took the lead, whose course was College English I. The theme of the competition was to discuss the significance of the humanities in the current context by extending the content of the textbook and integrating it with the ideological and political education. Ms. Sun shared her teaching ideas in 15 minutes : first, she analyzed the text and clarified its main lines, and in the process, she highlighted the language learning objectives of the course, which were to make students proficient in the use of vocabulary and expressions related to the theme of “humanities”. After that, Ms. Sun moved on to the attitudinal goal of the course, which was to extend the text and integrate it into the  ideological and political education, helping students to think about the role of the humanities in the development of society and the progress of mankind. Mr. Sun creatively guided students to explore the role of classical Chinese philosophical thought in the development of contemporary China, promoting a humanistic spirit and cultural confidence.

Ms. Sun Xiaoyuan finally won the second prize with a high score of 88.7 out of 7 contestants.

After the final of the college competition, the Engineering English Department held a general conference, and Vice Dean Yang Anwen gave an important speech on the “Three Advancements Work”. He explained the importance and progress of the “Three Advancements Work” to all teachers in the department. The Self Education Department launched the multilingual version of “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China ” into universities, textbooks, and classrooms (“Three Advancements Work”). The college leadership attaches great importance to this work and requires all departments (centers) to closely pay attention to the relevant requirements of this work and effectively promote the implementation of it in our college’s talent cultivation. He pointed out that foreign language education in universities is crucial for “telling the story of China well”, and we must take the initiative to answer the historical proposition of “what is the purpose of higher education for the construction of a strong nation; what is the purpose of foreign language for a strong nation”. Therefore, university English teachers must play a positive role in comprehensively promoting the deepening and implementation of the “Three Advancements Work”, summarizing the teaching experience of the “Three Advancements”, and further improving students’ practical abilities. At last, Vice Dean Yang Anwen also introduced the use of the Xi Jinping: The Governance of China ”multi-database comprehensive platform, encouraging everyone to organically integrate relevant content into teaching and promote ideological and political education.
