Sidelights on the Service of Volunteers from the College of Foreign Languages, Southwest Jiaotong University

If the spirit of Southwest Jiaotong University, a century-old famous university, is "Promoting Education and Invigorating China", then "volunteerism" is a vivid embodiment of the spirit of students in Jiaotong University of the contemporary era. In July 2019, a hot summer, more than 30 volunteers from Southwest Jiaotong University, like a breeze, had blown all over the Dujiangyan International Forum.

In 2019, Dujiangyan International Forum was sponsored by the National Committee of UNESCO, Chengdu Municipal People's government, UNESCO Institute of lifelong learning, UNESCO Institute of Educational Information Technology, and Beijing Normal University. The forum was opened on July 25 for two days. Centering on the theme of "Targeted Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development in Education", guests from home and abroad shared experiences and views for reference to jointly help targeted poverty alleviation in education. During this period, volunteers from our university actively participated in the reception of foreign guests, venue arrangements, venue guidance, interview translation, and other work in cooperation with the host unit, providing a strong voluntary service guarantee for the smooth holding and progress of this forum.

This year is the tenth year of the forum, which is of special significance, and volunteers also felt a great responsibility. There were 42 volunteers from all units in this International Forum, including more than 30 volunteers from our university, which accounts for the vast majority of volunteer service groups in this forum. For this reason, Ms. Zhao, director of conference affairs from the Chengdu Education Bureau, praised the Foreign College of Jiaotong University for providing a "big (volunteer) team" for this forum.

In fact, before the opening of this forum, the leaders of the College of Foreign Languages, Mr. Dai Ruoyu, and Mr. Li Bin had mobilized the students of the college to participate in the volunteer service of this forum for many times, and actively demonstrated the students' demeanor of the College of Foreign Languages; on the other hand, inspired by the strong learning atmosphere of the university, most students were willing to actively participate in the volunteer activities outside the university, so as to improve their quality and increase knowledge. Therefore, it is not surprising that volunteers in our university can organize a "big team". Of course, only the scale of "big" is not enough to ensure that volunteers can successfully and efficiently complete the service work in this Dujiangyan Forum. It is worth mentioning that volunteers' obedience to arrangements, service awareness regardless of gains and losses, excellent foreign language communication ability, and ability to deal with emergencies constituted the most important part of completing the volunteer service work in this forum.

On the 22nd, before the major meeting of the forum, ten students, including Huang Yuan, Zhang Jia, and Qing Peilin, from the College of Foreign Languages of our university, had already entered the volunteer position. Under the leadership of the teacher from Chengdu TV and Radio University, they fully served the early meeting. Then they took pains to devote themselves to the conference service work after the forum started. Due to the tense agenda of the meeting, volunteers took the initiative to cooperate with the relevant work of the main venue arrangement. Xie Hongxia and other students even worked late until the night for this purpose, and their dedication deeply touched the responsible teachers of the Chengdu Education Bureau. During the forum, two students, Jiang Rong and Lin Yupei, postgraduate students of the College of Foreign Languages, provided translation services for foreign guests to receive interviews and won unanimous praise from foreign guests. At the end of the forum, some volunteers of our university accepted the task of delivering the plane. In this process, the flight information of individual foreign guests was not updated in time, which led to the detention of foreign guests. Two students, Zhu Fengzhi and Yu Shun, volunteers of the same group, took the initiative to communicate with the teacher in charge, actively appeased the guests' emotions, and finally solved the emergency successfully, which was praised and recognized by the Korean expert.

The volunteer service of this forum makes volunteers experience the hardships and difficulties of participation in activities and organizations. At the same time, for more than a week before the volunteer service forum, the leaders and teachers of the College of Foreign Languages devoted a lot of energy to care the mood of volunteers; During the forum, Ms. Xu Xiaoyan and Mr. Zhang Yongli drove to the Forum Hotel to cheer the volunteers on; Mr. Li Bin and Mr. Dai Ruoyu actively coordinated to make students truly feel the concern from the college and love. Many students said that this volunteer activity has increased their knowledge and ability, and also realized the love and care of the university teachers, which is a worthwhile trip.

With the last Korean expert taking the flight to leave Chengdu on the morning of July 28, the volunteer task of Dujiangyan Forum was successfully completed, and the students returned to the quiet and harmonious Xipu Campus during the summer vacation from the real tense working state. At this time, Mr. Zhao from Chengdu Education Bureau sent a message to the volunteer WeChat group, which brought a cool feeling to the volunteers in summer: "Thanks all the teachers and students who participated in the volunteer service, you best annotated the volunteer spirit ‘Dedication, Friendship, Mutual Assistance and Progress’ with our practical actions, and all the good memories have been fixed. Thanks for the meeting! I wish you all a better tomorrow! "
