It’s well worth mentioning that Prof. Satoshi ōmura of University of Yamanashi jointly won the 2015 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with William C. Campbell due to their discovery of a new drug called avermectin, the derivatives of which have radically lowered the incidence of river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, as well as showed efficacy against other parasitic diseases. Their research is regarded as one of the most significant discoveries after penicillin in the 20th century.
